On Saturday 10/19, the UChicago Ortho team helped to clean up the parks! The team travelled to Nichols Park at 1355 E 53rd St in Hyde Park and completed a trash pick up day!

The team was comprised of 30+ people from our Ortho family who all wanted to make a difference in the south side community and assist in keeping our parks green!

Nichols Park is located at 1355 E. 53rd St. in he Hyde Park neighborhood. The park spans over 11.5 acres and includes a gymnasium and multi-purpose room with wonderful green spaces. The park itself includes a community flower garden, vegetable gardens and a wildflower meadow. There are even playgrounds, baseball fields and a sandbox for kids!

Nichols Park was acquired by the city in 1964. It was named after urban planner John Fountain Nichols (1912-1980) who was a life-long resident of Hyde Park. He was largely responsible for renewal efforts in the area and helped to rehabilitate Hyde Park. The park itself was actually saved from urbanization in the 1990’s after an attempt to turn the land into an area for townhouses to be built, and was expanded to what it is today.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out and supported and helped make this possible!
