The American Orthopaedic Association's 'Own the Bone' program was created in 2009 to to address the emerging epidemic of osteoporosis-related fragility fractures. Through this program, the AOA recognizes clinics who are excelling in their field and creating the best environment for their patients. This year, the 'Own the Bone' program awarded the University of Chicago Bone Clinic with the 'Star Performer' status, which is handed out to sites that achieve a 75% compliance rate in 5 out of the 10 prevention measures that the AOA recognizes. These prevention measures are, Calcium, Vitamin D, Exercise, Fall Prevention, Smoking, Alcohol, Pharma Recommended, BMD Testing Recommended, Patient Letter and Physician Letter. The Bone Clinic was at least 75% compliant in 7/10 of the prevention measures and was over 94% compliant in those measures.
