OrthoReach is an outreach and pipeline program that is led by residents, and is designed to engage students who are interested in learning more about Orthopaedic Surgery, medicine, and the track to medical school or other professional schools. This event is intended for students who are searching for a unique experience centered around reading x-rays, casting and splinting, surgical skills, ultrasounds and more. We also hope to provide information on shadowing opportunities, medical school applications, and resume building via informational pamphlets, panels with faculty, and 1-1 coaching during the event. Leaving this event, we hope that all participants gain a deeper understanding of these specialties and that they build relationships with their peers and the present volunteers and faculty members.
This year, OrthoReach had 60 participants who were able to come and learn from the team. We had students from several high schools, universities and post-bacc programs join us and they were able to experience everything The University of Chicago has to offer. We were also able to provide a great mentorship experience for the participants as we had volunteers from several different universities and hospitals attend the event and run each session. We have already seen several students reaching out to us regarding shadowing opportunities and we hope to continue the trend of bringing these students to the university.
