This is a program that is structured to offer a wide range of clinical, educational and research opportunities across two institutions. The fellow is given considerable latitude to select from those opportunities and “personalize” his/her own educational experience. The goal, ultimately, is to prepare the fellow for an academic practice.
In addition, Chicago is a great city with something for everyone, for the time outside the fellowship!
Partnership/Mentorship with Residents during Fellowship
- UChicago: 2nd year resident
- Northwestern: 4th year resident
Formal Oncology/Pathology education to Residents
- Pathology curriculum for resident education (UChicago): 10-12 week module of the Basic Science curriculum that reviews basic principles of MSK oncology (4 weeks) and pathology unknowns (6-8 weeks)
- University of Chicago Musculoskeletal Clinicopathologic Seminar: 3-day course taught by faculty to residents in Chicago/Upper Midwest Region (September/Fall). Fellow is a participant
National Meetings (Travel and lodging paid for by fellowship)
- Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MTS)
- American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS)
Expectation is that fellows will complete at least one research project during the year
Examples of Recent Projects
- Atypical Lipomas: should the diagnosis of well-differentiated liposarcoma be abandoned?
- Staged resections/reconstructions of soft tissue sarcomas after contaminated excisions
- Wound complications in soft tissue sarcomas of the thigh, identification of risk factors
- Thromboembolic events in patients with impending vs. completed pathologic fractures of the proximal femur
Resources for research
- Large database of cases at University of Chicago, with potential for collaboration with other institutions through SMOG
- Medical students/residents who can assist with research projects
- Some intramural funding for research projects
MSK programs at both institutions are designed to run independent of the fellow, so fellow is given the option to select opportunities independent of work-force needs
